Looking for a place to teach kids a little lesson on animal appreciation? Check out Ark Avilon Zoo in Tiendesitas, Pasig City.
The day after Christmas the blogger and his family traveled from their home in Pampanga to urban Manila to give the kids a view of the cityscape. Their first stop was in Ark Avilon Zoo.
Ark Avilon Zoo is a good place to treat kids to an animal of an experience within the city. The blogger always pass by Tiendesitas everyday and he never had a chance to explore it himself. This became a good excuse to be a kid again! :)
Entrance is P300/adult and kids that are not taller than 4 feet get a discounted rate of P200. Operating hours are from 9am-6pm. They have extended hours for the holiday season to cater to more visitors.
Pets (i.e. birds, rodents, reptiles) can be purchased at the entrance but at a not so friendly cost. The blogger’s brother asked about the red-footed box turtle and it was around P12, 000.00.
There were more birds than the usual zoo animals that our blogger got used to. It is sad to know that Giraffes and Elephants can no longer be seen in Zoos. The only Giraffes in the country can only be seen in Calauit Safari in Palawan. There may be some Elephants still but in pictures, they don’t look very healthy.

The highlight of the zoo would be “Jenny” – the female orangutan. She was all dressed up posing for photos with the zoo-goers. She was even free to roam around the zoo when her caretaker was away. The good thing about this zoo is that most animals are free to roam around too. During the trip our blogger and his nephew had the chance to pet the young deer that went out of its log cage. There was also a big blue bird that was walking around the 2nd floor of the zoo.

Santa could be missing a reindeer this Christmas... |
There was also a big albino python that can be petted. Between that and having a photo taken with an eagle standing on the blogger’s arms, the blogger chose the latter. He is actually more afraid of birds than snakes but he chose the eagle for that once in a lifetime photo opportunity. The bird was really heavy. He had to really use muscle to make sure the bird doesn’t get unbalanced and unintentionally get a peck or flap its wings on his face.

Other animals on display were a white tiger, Sumatran tigers, puma, leopard, lioness, a family of deer, donkeys, goats, boars, snakes, turtles, several species of fauna and rodents. There were also Arapaima which were fed chicken head.

Visitors can feed some of the animals by buying food items from the cashier. Chicken heads cost P50/bucket while fish food was at P30. Carrots cost P20/stick which can be fed to rabbits and guinea pigs.
There are no full meals sold inside. However, there is a snack bar selling chips and drinks on the 2nd floor of the zoo.
